Adonai Mitchell

21-Year-Old Wide ReceiverWR
2024 Fantasy Outlook
The Colts used the 52nd pick in the 2024 draft on Mitchell, a combine standout who was never his team's top receiver in college. He had just 560 yards in two seasons at Georgia behind WR Ladd McConkey and TE Brock Bowers, before coming into his own at Texas in 2023 with a 55-845-11 receiving line on 92 targets (28 fewer looks than first-round pick Xavier Worthy). There was talk of Mitchell sneaking into the first round after the 2024 Combine, where he had the longest broad jump (136 inches) and third-fastest 40 time (4.34 second) among wide receivers -- while checking in at 6-2, 205. Physically, he's the prototype for a No. 1 receiver, and with plenty of upside for continued development given that he'll turn 22 in October. He figures to replace Alec Pierce as the deep threat alongside Michael Pittman and slot man Josh Downs, with the Colts obviously hoping Mitchell won't be as one-dimensional as Pierce (though it might take some time). Big-time volume in Year 1 is unlikely, as the Colts still have Pittman locked in for a large target share and figure to run a lot with QB Anthony Richardson and RB Jonathan Taylor. Read Past Outlooks

Thriving at OTAs

Coach Shane Steichen said Thursday that Mitchell is "making a lot of plays" at OTAs, Kevin Bowen of 107.5 the Fan reports.
ANALYSIS
It sounds like the rookie second-round pick is getting a lot of first-team reps, in part because top wide receiver Michael Pittman has been out with a minor knee injury. Wearing a No. 10 jersey to signify the number of WRs drafted before him this spring, Mitchell has taken advantage of the early opportunity by catching a number of passes from starting QB Anthony Richardson. Still, it's unclear if Mitchell will head into Week 1 as a depth/rotation receiver or if he'll immediately supplant Alec Pierce as a starter alongside Pittman and slot man Josh Downs. There's also the question of how different that role might look if/when Mitchell replaces Pierce, as the latter was targeted on just 10.2 percent of his routes last year -- easily the the lowest rate in the league among regular starters at wide receiver.

Post-selection emotions run high
WRIndianapolis Colts
April 26, 2024
Mitchell, who was selected by the Colts with the 52nd overall pick Friday night in the 2024 NFL Draft, and Indianapolis general manager Chris Ballard both expressed frustration when speaking to reporters regarding some of the perception surrounding the Texas wide receiver, Stephen Holder of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell was once believed to be a first-round prospect, but reports he'd interviewed poorly and had some character concerns helped lead to a slide into Day 2. Ballard did not mince words when expressing his opinion about some of what he'd read regarding Mitchell's character, using profane language when speaking to the media and criticizing the use of anonymous sources in the reports. Meanwhile, the source of Mitchell's consternation was primarily his drop in draft position, which resulted in him being the 11th wide receiver taken over the first two rounds.
